Buckler’s Hard is committed to making its services accessible for all. Our staff are trained in disability awareness to the latest standards set by the local Tourist Authority and are here to ensure you enjoy your visit.
We firmly believe that targeted improvements in the right areas can make all the difference and we are working with our visitors and local access groups to identify where the improvements are most needed and practicable to do.
The historic shipbuilding village of Buckler’s Hard is by its nature not easy for wheelchairs access. The site has remained almost unchanged since the 18th century and includes mainly gravel paths, some steep slopes and narrow doorways and stairs to historic buildings. The Maritime Museum at Buckler’s Hard is on various levels as it is located within historic buildings.
We hope that by working closely with interest groups and analysing feedback from visitors we can make Buckler’s Hard more accessible.
The following facilities are provided:
• Ramped Access into the Museum Building
• Wheelchair Access door to lower level of Museum Building.
• Visual image guides to 1st floor areas of the Maritime Museum and shipwright’s cottage available at desk.
• Level floor access to St Mary’s Chapel
• A fully accessible toilet adjacent to the tearoom
• Ramped access from the car park area into entrance and tearoom
• A continuing programme of staff awareness and training in accessibility issues
We welcome comments on our services so please ask for our accessibility questionnaire during your visit to Buckler’s Hard.
Advice for visitors with dogs
Dogs are allowed in the village, but for the benefit of other visitors we do require that they be kept on a lead and under control at all times. Owners are also asked to ensure that no mess is left within the grounds where it will be offensive to others. We regret that we do not allow dogs inside Maritime Museum, Cottage Dsiplays or the Captains Cabin Café, unless they are guide dogs for the blind.
